Casarampi, Museum of Rural Life

DISTANCE FROM POSTIGNANO 19,5 km

The settlement consists of a handful of dwellings in a panoramic position that opens with a wide view as far as the Sibillini Mountains.

The village develops along a single central street, at the ends of which two gates once stood in ancient times, of which no trace remains. There is still a small church dedicated to San Bernardino, the well, and the oven that served the entire community, which numbered about 60 individuals.

The architecture reveals the typical traits of the area, with layers of styles ranging from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, and is largely intact.

In 2013, a museum of rural life was established within the village, housed in the vaulted cellars and stables of Casarampi, restored for this purpose to preserve and display the numerous tools collected over the years from local houses. The collection includes agricultural and domestic tools, documenting the ingenuity and creativity of the inhabitants, who cultivated cereals, legumes, vines, vegetables, saffron, and hemp, worked the woods, and raised livestock; it contains agricultural implements that bear witness to rural life in the Orsano plain before the mechanization of the 1950s.

These objects tell the story not only of how the agriculture of the past fed, clothed, and heated the mountain populations on the border between Foligno and Spoleto, but also of the family and social relationships between people, their connection with the land, water, plants, and animals, in a time when small communities had to be almost completely self-sufficient and capable of producing everything necessary for survival, from food to tools, from tableware to clothing.

Due to its border position between the territories of Spoleto, Trevi, and Foligno, Casarampi followed the fate of the nearby castles of Orsano and Cammoro, which changed hands several times between the 13th and 18th centuries, in addition to repeated seismic events; however, it has survived and, with its museum, represents a testimony of a time and a way of life that are difficult to imagine today.
